“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”
One of the classic “Peanuts” cartoons written by Charles Schultz has Lucy, Linus and Charlie Brown lying on the ground, all looking at the clouds. Lucy asks Linus what his imagination allows him to see in the cloud formations. He points out an arrangement which he says resembles a map of the British Honduras, another a profile of the painter Thomas Eakins and finally an impression of the stoning of Stephen, with the apostle Paul standing by. When Lucy asks Charlie Brown what he sees, he responds, “Well, I was going to say a ducky and a horsey, but I changed my mind.”
All of us look at life through a filter. The old King James Version of 1 Corinthians 13:11 says, “We see through a glass darkly.” The experiences of life itself often cause us to lose the sense of childlike wonder. The awesomeness of God’s revelation gets reduced to a ducky and a horsey.
The good news of Jeremiah 33:3 is that the Creator of the universe invites us to let Him remove the blinders. When Jeremiah was in prison and experiencing deep despair, God came to him with a promise that there is nothing which can separate us from the hidden treasures of God’s love. In any place, at any time, all we need to do is call out to Him, and He will answer.
God’s answer may not be on our terms, but this He has promised to do – We will begin to see things from His perspective. Seeing the awesome power of God at work all around us, our mind will become attuned to wait for His timing. Seeing how God has expressed His love far beyond anything we will ever deserve, we will learn to trust His goodness.
That truly is awesome!
Father, I don’t want to turn into a grumpy old person. I want to grow with a sense of awe for the inaccessible wonder of Your power and glory. Thank You for patiently beckoning me to know You more fully. I call on You today to open my eyes, so I can see life from Your perspective. Make me like a child again.
